SMD MLCC cracking and catching fire.

I didn't know it was a thing, but they make special caps for the automotive industry to reduce cracking.

They do but they are mostly used for safety related functions, units like ABS ECUs that are subject to severe heat cycling and on permanently powered areas of the circuitry like back-up memory supplies - they are very expensive in comparison to normal caps. One of the fun jobs in ECU design is cracking ceramic caps (they go short circuit) and then powering up - any fire must be non-sustainable and contained within the case.
