For a big single running wasted spark my take on this is to place the missing tooth around bottom dead centre. The starting technique is to bring the engine just past TDC and onto the exhaust stroke to allow the engine to gain some momentum and to through an intake stroke before it hits compression so you will get a few teeth before the missing tooth, fire the injector when it hits the missing tooth and then count teeth, one tooth is placed at the ignition angle and that is where you trigger the coil., the coil is energised on a previous tooth.
