Radio deutschland is a colorful combination of entertainment and information, from culture to sport.

Germany is home to more than 500 radio stations licensed by media agencies in each state. In addition to the commercial and public service Radio deutschland, there are an increasing number of self-governing community radio stations.

The ARD is the national broadcaster in Germany and offers numerous popular programs like "Nachtcafe" (Night Cafe). It has a reach of more than 1.5 million listeners.

Deutsche Welle, also known as DW, is an international broadcaster that provides news in up to 30 languages and promotes exchange between foreign cultures. Its radio programs are listened to in up to 50 countries around the world.

In addition to public service radio, there are several hundred commercial stations that offer local programming. These include a number of football programmes, rock and pop music and classical radio.

For people with a German background, radio is the second most popular mass medium after television. In fact, over 80 percent of the population above the age of 14 tunes in regularly.

There are 70 public-service radio stations in Germany and 283 commercial ones. Most of the public-service stations are regionally oriented while most commercial radios are nationwide in scope.

The national radio network of the Federal Republic of Germany, ARD, has two nationally broadcast radio programs, Deutschlandfunk and Deutschlandradio Kultur, that air news and current affairs. In addition, ARD has a number of other stations that are dedicated to various areas of interest, such as the popular children's program, Das Sendung mit der Maus or the rock music show, Rockpalast.
