Hello Members,

i am a newbie - made a search but did not find relevant info.

I plan to use the 3-cyl common rail turbo diesel engine out of a Smart car to make a marine generator. My aim is not to increase its performance, but to run it outside the car with marine-style cooling and exhaust (on a boat, exhaust gases are mixed and cooled down with sea water - this "wet exhaust" is taking the exhaust fume overboard. Cooling is done through a heat exchanger - we use sea water to cool down the coolant). Other specifications: no gearbox is used and I would not use the original dashboard clusters either. All is all, I would be grateful for your feedback if Speeduino is suitable for common rail turbodiesels - and also, if you think the OEM ECU really cannot be used in my project.
Thank you inn advance!

That sounds like an interesting project. I am very much interested in live-aboard type things. My long term plan is to live on a catamaran.

A couple of questions come to mind. I'm sure someone much more knowledgeable will chime in.

Can speeduino handle the current and voltage of the injectors? I believe most common rail injectors use more power than gasoline injectors.

Injection timing is critical for diesel performance. I wonder if speeduino is capable of controlling the injection timing in the proper way.

Thank you for your answer.

Maybe You also know the answer to my second thought... do I need a standalone ECU at all, if I till be able to use all the input sensors (at least mimic some of them with resistors) but not to connect some of the outputs, like instrument cluster, alternator, transmission sensors?

Yes -the OM660/1 diesel is the most lightweight modern (Euro4) diesel on the market - without flywheel, alternator, water pump and radiator it weights about 100 pound. You may couple it with the GM BAS+ eassist starter-alternator (30pounds), and you get a cheap, lightweight and powerful generator - at the fraction of the price of other solutions. The only question is the ECU...

There are groups using this engine to power small aircraft, boats, and other small machines. With a quick web search, I also found places that reprogram the stock ecu for performance. Maybe you will find the answers that you need from one of these areas.

Hello, I did check out the specialist sites for OM660 engine - some use it for a motorbike, some use it for marine application, some for airplane. I contacted all of them - plus about 4 main standalone ECU providers. Only special components ECU seems to be used - they gave me an offer for about 1.900 USD.
I kind of hoped that the speeduino can do the job - as iesel tuning is a large industry by now.

Search for CDI aftermarket ECU's.

They basically don't exist.

Give it another 5-10 years or so.

Speeduino has 0 capability to do Diesel. Would need completely different hardware and firmware.
