Help with building your Speeduino, installing it, getting it to run etc.

Hey Everyone,
I have a 0.4 board running 202305FW, and installed in the car hooked up the 4age 16v and have all my sensors calibrated.
I am running a stock distributor running 24+1 through a max2966. The only changes were breaking the grounds of the 24t and 1t and running a shielded cable to the ECU. I have tested this with a drill and while cranking using the composite logger. Seems to be working with no loss so far.

I am struggling to get the car started using the speeduino generic basmap. When i crank the engine it stalls after a few goes. My current crank angle is set to 15. I chose 15 as it says in the manual to be the next tooth after TDC. (360/24 = 15)
Stock distributor is lined up as per the 4age manual with bore 1 at TDC and the wheel on the first post for spark.

Injectors are not stock due to low impedence. So i got some denso 23250-50040 - These should be high impedence 250cc/min

Can someone take a look at my setup and see if there is anything that needs changing?

I think for the dual wheel decoder, trigger angle is the number of degrees between TDC and the single tooth passing the sensor.

For clarification moving forward, the "/", "+" and"-" in wheel designations is important. 24+1 is a 25-tooth wheel. 24/1 is two wheels, a 24T and a 1T.

Please post a log of starting attempts, with the exact tune used for the log.

That's fine, but always check for true timing with a timing light. Always.

The Forum wouldn't let me edit my post to finish it. BS  Now it lost my edits, and I don't have time to re-write it. Sorry. Maybe another time.

Thanks for your replies -
PSIG - I attached the whole project folder i was working with. There are datalogs in there too. Is there anything in particular from the folder you are after?

One thing i couldn't quite see was the composite logger data when opening a log file in tuner studio. Is there a trick to get this to playback?

- little hard to test with a timing light and crank at the same time with one person. I'll see if i can get a friend to come help.

A few updates.
I have tested used the output tester to make sure the spark and injectors work as intended.
Spark should be good as I got it to work after the distributor, on bore 1 and lined up on TDC (first post)
Injector channels 1and 4 both click at the same time for Injector 1 output and, 2 and 3 both click at the same time for Injector 2 output.

I have added some distributor photos to show how the sensors line up with the posts/points. I used a 24/4 distributor to compare the sensor positions (as you will see 2 different distributors)

I see only tooth logs (*.csv). I do not see any run logs (*.msl or *.mlg).

Did you see any blue lines when taking the log?

Get or make a remote starter switch. A simple push-button switch with wires and clips, connected between battery power and starter solenoid. It takes the place of the key switch signal to spin the starter.

Hi PSIG,
- Yeah tooth logs are what i took - I see there is a datalog menu at the top now. I'll see if i can get a log of the next start.
- I did see blue lines when opening the tooth log. I just couldn't open it and navigate to the composite log, and see what i took a snip of what i saw during cranking.
- remote switch sounds like a good plan. I do have a question about cold injector though, as i see my engine has one and it runs on a time with the starter relay, would it be better to run the remote switch to the starter relay, or do i not need a cold start injector with speeduino?

I have been watching a few videos on speeduino and i think i may have my timing out and trigger teeth wrong in the setup.
This video at 2:20 seems to show i need half the teeth and my trigger angle may be out by 180. What are your thoughts?

More Updates
- managed to take some logs of starting.
- Could smell petrol and found plugs wet, so fuel is working
- Managed to get the timing light out and try a test while cranking. Found the timing light not flashing while cranking.
- Then i tested the spark outputs and confirmed timing light works, so most likely culprit at this point is battery. Im assuming the coil cant fire while the battery is low due to cranking?
The datalogs may not show the battery change as i am running the speeduino off a separate battery, but grounds are connected between batteries.

If you are running the speedy off a separate battery, the dwell will not be adjusted for battery voltage. This is essential during cranking, when voltage is at the lowest, and increased dwell is not only necessary but possible due to long times between firing. Same problem with injector dead times, your mixture will be off due to longer times to open injectors. These both need the adjustment speedy does. A separate battery prevents the adjustment.

You need speedy to see the same voltage as the coils and injectors. There is even a setting to adjust and ensure the voltage speedy sees is accurate, it's that critical.

I do think that there was a time when the primary wheel had to be at crank speed so you halved the number of teeth if it was actually on the cam, but I'm not sure that's true now. the code looks like it can handle cam speed correctly. (even though the comment still say it has to be at crank speed :-/)
your log is showing it cranking at around 450 rpm which I think might be double what it really is.
so I think you should configure 24 teeth on the primary wheel.
