Triumph TR6 to TBI

Hi,

I have a Triumph TR6 that I have always wanted to convert to EFI. While I was researching a certain other DIY EMS, I came across Speeduino, and it looks like it is a good match to what I am interested in. I also like that it is open source, and built on a platform that is easy to work with.

The car has 2 carbs, which I will convert to TBI, using one injector each.

I am planning to use 36-1 trigger wheel on the crank, and VR sensor, for spark output, a coil pack with integrated ignitors in wasted spark mode.

For O2 I am thinking of the https://www.14point7.com/products/slc-free kit.

I also want to control an electric fan via the speeduino as well.

I have yet to decide on the other sensors etc.

So, first, is the speeduino a good choice for this conversion?

Since the car is currently in parts (easy to access stuff) I am planning on adding the various sensors as I put it back together.

Next step would be to get it running again on the carbs, using the speeduino for fan control only. Then use speeduino for ignition control, and finally for fuel as well. Does this approach make sense, or is it better to just go for full EFI control from the get go?

Also, will the O2 controller mentioned above work with the speeduino?

Welcome, Todd. Your application and plan would appear to fit well with Speeduino. The SLC series will work. How you stage your control with Speedy from fan to fuel is entirely up to you and your comfort level.

I have read through quite a few threads in the Getting Started and User Projects sections. I have seen some threads on TBI, but none on a dual TBI. I expect I will have to lean on the support of fellow forum members when it comes to getting everything configured and tuned.

One quick question, I have changed mu plan from using VR sensor to Hall sensor. Can a hall sensor be used directly with the speeduino board or will I need to add some signal conditioning?

No problem, as there is plenty of help here, including several members with single and multiple TBI experience.

Generally, yes, they are used directly with simple jumper settings and no conditioner circuit. Most automotive hall sensors ground the signal line when active and work on 5V as required by Speeduino (references here and here). For the odd 12V sensors and/or types that inject voltage when active, only one in-line diode or resistor is needed in the harness or on the board. Determine or verify the functional requirements of your sensor(s) and we can go from there.

I'm in the process of getting the sensors and stuff I need to build the speeduino. Once I get started with the build I'll put up a thread about it. It'll be a long running one though as I am installing the sensors as I finish restoration of the car, and given the rate I work at (about as fast as a glacier) and amount of time I have to do it (job and all) the updates will be few and far between.

Have you considered using the 3 pairs of throttle bodies from the original lucas mechanical fuel injection setup?

EFI would certainly make the TR6 more reliable and cheaper to maimtain than it was with the old lucus setup. We used to have one, just sorry we havent got it anymore.

I am located on the west coast of Canada. The lucas setup is about as rare as hens teeth here, and also way beyond my budget. I have seen the TBI conversion kit by Rick Patton sold online, and I'm using that as inspiration to fabricate my own setup. My main goal is to improve fuel economy, and increase reliability. Once I get all the parts together I'm going to start a build thread for it.

don't know if you can get them in Canada, but i had good success with the GM TBi, single injector, that was very common here in Europe, replacing the SU carb on my Mini A-Series engine.
i just made an adapter plate to handle the differend bold pattern. then i got lazy and just merged together all other parts to make it run on the Multec ECU to avoid making a new loom and programming maps. and after a bit of self-learning to get the AFR down it worked quite well.

Yes they are very common, and cheap too. One issue is that my car it's a dual carb, and from what I can see the GM TBI are always single. I was looking at Chevy S10 2.5 L unit, but I think it is too big. I would need 2 or something 1/2 the size (or thereabouts).

Definitely an interesting idea though, and I'll do some more research to see if I can find something for a smaller engine in the GM line.

you could use 2 of them, and somehow try to make them work together, using only one TPS and idle motor.

or as another idea, use bike throttle bodies, like BMW R1100. beeing a Boxer engine it needs 2 individual throttle bodies that can work together. quite easy to fit to any other engine.

years ago i made a "twin carb" replacement for the factory TBi of the Rover Minis from 1992-96. had to be fully plug and play and work with everything, like brake booster, crankcase evacuation, etc. worked really great, but i don't remember the throttle bodies, only that they used Weber injectors
