Molex 48 position header BOB

Hello,

I have been lurking for a while and decided to finally give back to the community. While in the process of building up my speeduino system, i was having a difficult time deciding on a connector for the 0.4v board. I have the ST04 from WTMtronics, but it is not ment to be permanent. So i have designed a board that accomplishes the same but with an actual ECU connector. It uses the Molex 48 position header PN 5007620481. These are really inexpensive to buy along with the mating plug and pins. I have attached some renderings of the 2nd revision of the board. I havent ordered these yet as i just finished making changes from my initial design. Please let me know what you think and if you see any areas of improvement!

Thank you

Hi

Just a small feedback:
Red circles: avoid having copper traces too close to the mechanical holes, and take care of short circuits if you will use metal spacer.
Orange circles: increase the distance between traces to traces, and try to have more copper.
Try to avoid "antennas".

Add vias from top to bottom in the ground plan into all the pcb area to have a better grounding.
;)

FRAM,

I appreciate your feedback, i took your advice and made some adjustments. I send the board out for production, and i have attached a few pictures of the final product. i am extremely happy with the end result. I do have a few tweaks i will make in the next revision. I want to incorporate the usb interface into the unused pins on the connector. That way opening the case wont be necessary.

Nice! 8-) Are the case screw holes plated to ground the case? One suggestion - on future versions, print the connector part number and the mating connector number(s) directly on the board. ;) Perhaps even the wire terminal, cap and blind plug numbers to make it easy for those unfamiliar with how to select stuff from the zillions of options. Everything they [mostly] need to know to get it done.

No the case screw holes are not plated through... YET! It is one of my changes on future revisions. I am still learning the best ways to do things in EasyEDA. I used to use Eagle, but found it unnecessarily complicated and difficult to get a handle on. Once I figure out the best way to make LARGE plated through holes, i will release a new revision of the board.

As far as a BOM, there is one in the EasyEDA project page, but that is a great idea to have it included on the board itself. I have plenty of room to add text to the silk screen.

That looks like the sort of thing I need. Are you thinking about selling a kit?

The thought has crossed my mind, but i dont have the time to make up kits and sell them. Plus, im not 100% happy with the final product yet, so i wouldnt want to sell anything that is half finished. I have a few of these boards left and a few of the other components. So, If you are interested in one and dont mind one that isnt perfect, send me a PM and we can work something out.

I figured i would post up the part numbers for the Molex connector and its matching pins and housing as well as the rest of the parts to finish out this board. That way if anyone else is interested in making this board, they arent left scratching their heads looking for the right part numbers.

PCB CONNECTOR HEADER - MOLEX - 5007620481
CONNECTOR RECEPTICLE - MOLEX - 0643201311
WIRE BACK SHELL - MOLEX - 0643201301
BLIND PLUGS - MOLEX - 0643251010 (ONLY NEED 10 OF THESE, BUT GET EXTRA)
14-16AWG TERMINAL - MOLEX - 0643231039 (ONLY NEED 6 OF THESE, BUT GET EXTRA)
18-20AWG TERMINAL - MOLEX - 0643231029 (ONLY NEED 32 OF THESE, BUT GET EXTRA)
40 POSITION HEADER - 3M - 30340-6002HB
2 POS TERMINAL BLOCK - PHOENIX - 1935161

All parts can be purchased from DigiKey, Mouser, Etc... Board can be ordered with the attached gerber files from any board house of your choosing, or from JLCPCB using the link in the first post.

The IDC/Dupont cable is a custom length cable that i made. I sourced the parts locally from an electronics surplus store, so i do not have part numbers at the moment. Next time i am down there i will grab them to add to my BOM.

Also, attached is the current pinout.

Hi, a bump for this thread and kit. I installed it this weekend on my Speeduino and car and I'm very happy. Especially like the fact that the pins can be unlocked and removed from the plug without special tools since I'll be replacing the TPS and adding injection and more sensors in the coming months.

Only trouble I had was the wires for the vr sensor proved a little hard to get into the plug, mainly down to my crimping tool and technique I'm sure.
Thanks @ironmanisanemic

Love the idea. Do you have any updated pics ?
