That's a good setup for testing a trigger wheel and sensor distance. If you just want to check function, whether on the vehicle or on the bench, just apply power and connect an LED and resistor from the +V wire to the sensor signal pin. Most automotive Hall sensors are open-collector or open-drain, so it will light the LED when something ferrous (wheel tooth, wrench, etc) comes near.
