Help with building your Speeduino, installing it, getting it to run etc.

Hi everyone.

I'm very new to this whole DIY tuning thing, and this is my first post. I've read the Wiki, the beginner's guide in the forum, and browsed the forums a bit looking for some information.

I have a 1964 Ford F100 pickup and a 5.0L V8 out of an F150. I'm hoping to use the Speeduino to control the EFI and ignition. I'm working on getting a 36-1 crank wheel in, and I just picked up a crank sensor to (hopefully) run with it. Which leads me to my first question...

Is this crank sensor a VR or hall sensor? Since it is a 2 pin, I think this VR, but I'd appreciate a confirmation. Just trying to figure out of I need the VR conditioner to go with my board.

Second, I'd like to use the ignition system from a 2000 Ford Explorer. This vehicle was originally a wasted spark design using 2 of the coils I've linked below. As I've learned from browsing this site, I believe these are "dumb" coils and I'd need an added igniter. Browsing around, it seems like the "Bosch 211" has been mentioned on this site a few times. Doing some Googling, I landed on a 211 style igniter from DIY-EFI.

So the second question - can I use these coils with the 211 style driver? If so, I might have some more questions later regarding specific settings once I start installing and tuning.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post, and for any information you can provide. Looking forward to getting my truck on the road!

Yes, that is a stock Ford VR sensor, and will need a VR signal conditioner module.

Be aware, there may be some easy or less-expensive shortcuts to a 36-1 wheel on a Ford, as many came with them stock. I don't know the year of your 5.0, but perhaps the damper from an Explorer would pop on there (if it aligns for the belt and cover), or other stock-wheel options. Ford wheels (or copies) are designed for good signal with Ford sensors.

While you're cannibalizing an Explorer, grab the cycle sensor (distributor stub), to plug the hole and drive the oil pump when you pull the useless distributor out. Oh, and the coil bracket is worth a look if it helps get it all together.

Yes, the 211 works well for up to 4 coils. James at DIY is a respected member here, but you'll pay a lot to get it out of England. If you're in the USA, online sites have them for under $20, and seem to work "OK". The Audi part number for them 4D 0905 351 can help in searches. Real ones are expensive. Search here for connectors and terminals if you don't find them at the 'yard. Be sure to mount on a heat sink location or heat sink block.

The coils work fine, although you're not really using the ignition 'system', and only the coils from it. As Speeduino controls the coils (not a separate brain box like EDIS), there are many alternatives if they fit the project better, such as the '97+ Neon coils that are virtually a direct replacement for the EDIS coils, but with male terminals and a flat bottom that can mount-up easier in some cases. Lots of choices. If you have it figured-out, then run with whatever inspires you.

For most of these things, a raid on the wrecking yard can be very productive and provide new insights or ideas, even if you plan to use 'new' stuff in the final setup. Have fun planning and scheming, and ask as you go. 8-)
