I think about the only major additional feature that would be nice is GDI ability for the newest engines. But I think that would require additional timers. (if done properly, it may allow this to be used on common rail diesels - providing an external driver for the diesel injectors is used)

Timers aren't so much the issue as the actual driver circuit itself. GDI drivers run at significantly higher voltages (Typically from 60v up to 120v) and require very different circuitry than traditional 12v injectors.

There would still need to be pump control added, but that isn't too hard in the scheme of things, but getting a suitable driver arrangement is the biggest hurdle.

Perhaps the Delphi IDM-2 GDI driver can be used:

https://www.delphi.com/manufacturers/au ... s/ecm/idm2
The Delphi IDM-2 GDi Driver Control Module is an injector driver module that can be used with a port fuel injection engine control module or powertrain control module to modify the electronic signal and effectively operate gasoline direct injection (GDi) fuel injectors and provide high pressure fuel pump control. It is designed to provide manufacturers with a low cost option to implement GDi in an existing port fuel injection engine program and help enhance performance and fuel economy and reduce exhaust emissions.
They were used on 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.9L engines, and possibly others. Used on ebay for $75-$100.

Wow, interesting unit! It even does the pump control.

We didn't get the 3.9 engine here in Aus so none of them available here unfortunately. I'll have a look around and see if I can find any wiring diagrams, but in theory that should almost work out of the box.

Looks like it wasn't a UK, Europe model either as none available :-( shame as it is ideal!

;)

Now if we can find a more widespread, globally distributed car that uses it beyond just the 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.9L engine. A wiring diagram would be nice too, but somebody must have an alldata access.

I got one of these IC in as a sample to experiment with direct injectors, they have a Dev board but that is a bit expensive , though the circuit and sample code is available as are the PCB layouts.

the IDM2 is made as a complete standalone driver that can be added to any ECU including retrofit to older ECU's, It is an interesting solution. But if we're going to keep this on the cheap side, then our own design of GDI injector drivers deserves consideration. It should not be much more complex than a regular injector driver. My problem is that I don't know quite how they work or any of the parameters of the injectors (resistance, impedance, ...) I'll see if I can dig something up and maybe even find a suitable solution.

If you read the data sheet for that IC I linked too you will see it is much more complex than a normal injector driver. High voltage boost and holding phases all add to the circuit and control method complexity.
